Carmelo Anthony
Carmelo Anthony is a famous and extremely well-known American basketball player who currently plays for the New York Knicks. Today he is most likely one of the most recognized basketball players in the sports world. Anthony has helped lead the Nuggets to the playoffs every year for 6 years straight. He also won a bronze medal at the 2004 Olympics and gold medals at both 2008 and 2012 Olympic games. During his Olympic career he is most known for his game against Nigeria when he scored an impressive 37 points, making him an Olympic record holder. Recently in 2014 he broke a Knicks record by scoring 62 points against the Charlotte Bobcats at Madison Square Garden.
Anthony was born in Brooklyn, New York City to a Puerto Rican Father and an African American Mother. His father, also named Carmelo Anthony died of cancer when Anthony was at the age of 2.
Interestingly, Anthony often visits Puerto Rico to do charity work. Through his charitable foundation, Anthony rebuilds basketball courts around the US. One of these courts includes one that he built in San Juan, Puerto Rico in an impoverished slum section of Viejo San Juan named La Perla. Anthony has also restored basketball courts in a city outside of San Juan named Bayamon and in the coastal town of Luquillo. Anthony is expected to build more basketball courts throughout the island. Anthony is the husband of TV personality Alani Anthony who is also Puerto Rican.

Alani Anthony -AkA La La
Alani is a American television Personality and actress. She is best known for her work on MTV as a disc Jockey for the show Total Request live. Alani was both born and raised in Brooklyn, New York to Puerto Rican Parents. Alani attended Howard University a historically black university where she majored in Communications.
Besides being a disk jockey for MTVs total request live, Alani also hosted reunion specials for The Flavor of Love and I love New York. Alani is an accredited actress as she has been in several well-known films including: Two can play that game (2001), Sex and the City (2003), You got Served (2004), and Think like a Man Too (2014).

Jose Campeche
One of the most famous and influential Afro-Puerto Ricans is artist Jose Compeche. Compeche was Born in San Juan, Puerto on December 23, 1751. Campeche was the son of Tomas Campeche and Maria Jordan y Marques. His father Tomas Campeche was a freed slave born on the island of Puerto Rico. Tomas Campeche was also a painter. His mother Maria Jordan y Maques was a native of the Canary Islands. Campeche is known for his Rococo style which is considered by many to be the best in the Americans of the 18th century. In Puerto Rico there are several schools named in his honor.
Jesus Colon
It is well known that there are a large amount of people of Puerto Rican descent that reside in New York. The reasons for the large-scale migration are many however, one of their most famous contributions is that of the Nuyorican culture.
Born in Cayey Puerto Rico in 1901, Jesus Colon is recognized to be the father of the Nuyorican Movement. The Nuyorican Movement was a literary movement that centered on the theme of the immigration of Puerto Ricans from the island to New York City. The movement was born due to the experiences Colon had while living in New York. Colon was discriminated against due to the color of his skin and along with his difficulty speaking English. His most famous and well-read work is titled 'A Puerto Rican in New York’. This work in its own right was the birth of the Nuyorican movement. One author that is also well identified from the movement is Esmeralda Santiago.

Rafael Cordero
Cordero is deemed to be
the father of public education in Puerto Rico. Cordero was born in San Juan,
Puerto Rico into a very underprivileged family. He had three siblings and had an
adoration for school. Cordero educated himself at a young age and helped
himself foster the skills needed in order to teach primary school.
In they early 19th century, Cordero created a free school in his house for all children regardless of race. The school was made for children who were unable to afford a proper education. Codero continued teaching children of all colors for 58 years. He taught reading, calligraphy, math, and the catholic religion. Victor Cruz
Victor Cruz is an American football player for the New York Giants. Cruz plays as a Wide Receiver and was born on November 11, 1986. His father was an American American firefighter who was killed in a fire in 2007. His mother is Puerto Rican. Cruz is best known for his famous touch-down dance in which he dances salsa. In another interview Cruz states that his touch-down was inspired by his grandmother.
José Luis Feliciano Vega or Cheo Feliciano
Cheo Feliciano was a famous salsa and bolero singer who was born and raised in Ponce, Puerto Rico. He was nicknamed Cheo by his friends and family and the name never left him. Cheo attended the Escuela Libre de Musica Juan Morel Campos where he studied percussion.
In 1952 Feliciano moved to Spanish Harlem in New York City. In Spanish Harlem he auditioned as a percussionist for the "Ciro Rimac's Review" music band which was his first professional music job. In October of 1957 Feliciano joined the Joe Cuba Sexet and was lead vocals on the song Perfidia where he sang with them from ten years. Because of his growing drug addiction Cheo was forced to stop preforming music, but later came back in 1972 with his first solo album named Cheo. Cheo has over 15 hit song on Latin music charts and 24 albums; his latest which was released in 2012.
On April 17, 2014 Cheo died in a car accident on Highway 176 in Cupey a section of San Juan. Cheo lost control of his car and crashed into a light pole.

Don Omar
Don Omar is a famous Puerto Rican reggaeton artist. The oldest son of his two parents he was born and raised in Carolina, Puerto Rico a city right outside of San Juan. Showing a love for music from an early age he busted onto the Latin music scene in the late 90's. Soon after his first record in 2003, Don Omar broke record sales and became the highest ranking reggeaton artist on the top 10 Latin Billboard charts with his 2006 studio album King of Kings.
